Sakaimachi Street is located in central Otaru, a short walk from Otaru Canal Area. Otaru used to thrived as a port city and many trading and shipping companies contructed imporessive Western style building in the city center to house their offices and shop. Nowadays many of the buildings been converted into restaurants, cafes, souvenirs, boutiques and museums.

There are several famous museums such as Kitaichi Venice Museum of Art, Nitori Otaru Art Base, and so on
You can find a few glass workshops to enjoy hands-on experience in creating local Otaru Glass.

You can also visit Otaru Denuki a narrow path where there are appx 20 small shops in the historical building.

Take the Otaru Mt. Tengu Ropeway to the top of Mt. Tengu, a 532m mountain to the south of the Otaru city centre, and you can look out over Ishikari Bay and the Shakotan Peninsula. The Otaru night scenery is particularly beautiful.

At the top of the mountain you’ll find a ski museum, the Tengu Museum that features all kinds of articles relating to Tengu, the mythical creature after which the mountain was named, restaurants and more.

Otaru Aquarium is a large scale aquarium representative of Hokkaido. There are 5000 cold and warm water fish of 250 varieties on display. If you visit in winter, there may be penguins taking a walk in the snow. There are many sights to see, including the fun dynamic dolphin show, the earless seal meal time, and the pelican walk in the building.
